About

Fanning, Fanning & Associates Inc.

Firm's History

Honoring the tradition of the pioneers of our profession, we proudly claim a direct connection to the early days of mechanical and electrical engineering in the construction industry in Texas. Formed in 1938, Zumwalt and Vinther opened a branch office in Lubbock in 1956 with Jack F. Roberts as Resident Engineer. Norris Fanning was hired that same year as a working ME student at Texas Tech. John Fanning joined the staff in 1962 as a working EE student at Texas Tech. Norris Fanning was named Vice President in charge of the Lubbock office in 1970. By mutual agreement, the Lubbock Branch of Zumwalt and Vinther was purchased by the employees in 1974. The new firm, organized as Fanning, Fanning, and Agnew, Inc., continued the practice of consulting engineering, with Norris becoming President and John serving as Vice President. Scott Fanning joined the staff in 1976, becoming the first of the second generation. When Mr. Agnew withdrew in 1987, the name was changed to Fanning, Fanning & Associates, Inc. In December 2017, Scott M. Fanning was promoted to President, and Doyle F. Fanning was promoted to Secretary-Treasurer. The following year, in January 2018, Allen K. Ware was promoted to Vice President, leading the Electrical Department.

FFA has enjoyed a long relationship with Texas Tech University and TTUHSC. A vast majority of the central utilities infrastructure and plant capacity were designed by FFA or our predecessors. We are engineers of record for many buildings on campus and associated renovations. Since all our principals and engineering staff members are graduates of Texas Tech, we have an ingrained loyalty and unique understanding of TTU facilities.

FFA has also enjoyed a long relationship with Covenant Health System (formerly Methodist and St. Mary’s Hospitals), where we have designed most of the infrastructure for their facilities in West Texas.

FFA has a unique relationship with the cotton industry in the United States. We have designed all of the USDA AMS cotton classing labs in the nation. There are currently nine, and we have an open-ended contract with the USDA for design and improvements. This relationship began in 1983 when we designed the first successful environmental system to maintain tight temperature and humidity required to meet the ASTM condition for classing cotton in Lamesa. Through the years, we have been on the leading edge of air conditioning for fiber testing.
